1. Matte and Textured Finishes Over High-Gloss
High-gloss cabinetry was dominant for years, but matte, textured, and soft-touch finishes are now the more popular request — they hide fingerprints and daily wear far better, which matters in a working kitchen.
2. Dedicated Wet and Dry Zones
Especially in larger homes, splitting the kitchen into a wet zone for heavy cooking and a dry zone for prep and storage is a growing trend. It keeps the main kitchen cleaner and is particularly practical in Bengali households with regular fish and heavy-oil cooking.
3. Tall Units Over Wide Base Cabinets
Floor-to-ceiling tall units — for pantry storage, ovens, and appliances — are increasingly preferred over wide, low cabinet runs. They free up counter and floor space while holding significantly more.
4. Under-Cabinet and Toe-Kick Lighting
Layered kitchen lighting, including under-cabinet task lighting and subtle toe-kick lighting, has moved from a premium add-on to a fairly standard request — it makes food prep easier and adds a noticeably higher-end feel for relatively low cost.
5. Ventilation Planned Around Indian Cooking
Chimney placement and airflow planning, tailored to the heat and oil output of Indian cooking specifically, remains one of the most requested — and most often neglected — parts of kitchen design in Kolkata homes.
